Sharing is caring!

Are you struggling to reach your step goal?

Maybe you’re not trying to reach 10k steps, but are simply trying to get more steps in a day than you have been.

Studies show that while we don’t necessarily need exactly 10k steps a day to be healthy, we can all do just a little bit more, and every little bit helps.

For over a decade, I have worn a fitness tracker, and one of the things I’ve realized is that if I am not intentional about moving, I am extremely sedentary.

I’ve always been bookish.

Give me a cup of tea, a reading nook, and a good book, and I’ll be there all day long! But this is not healthy. Our bodies were created to move… and move a lot.

The one problem I’ve encountered as a stay-at-home mom, even more so as a work-at-home mom, is how to get my 10,000 + steps in.

I have had to become very creative in this area.

Here are some ways I’ve found to help me reach 10,000 steps. And while lately I’ve only been consistently reaching only half of that, I’m back to working hard to reach my 10-kay each day!

(see how I made that rhyme?)

1. Walk as you pray

When I get up, the first thing I do is grab my first dose of ascorbic acid and walk. I walk and pray, because mornings are my time of devotion. This not only helps me focus, it helps my body wake up. I usually walk and pray for 20 minutes.

2. Walk and work

I try to find ways to use my tablet or smart phone to work while walking. Ideas are: scheduling social media posts, editing images, or recording podcasts.

You can also do research while walking, such as listening to audio books and podcasts, you can even take voice notes of any research you can use.

3. Walk in place and cook

Stir those pots and stomp away!

4. Walk in place and do dishes

Rinse your dishes while you step-touch, step-touch.

5. Walk in place while you fold laundry

Step back and forth while you’re folding those clothes, plus you can do a few rounds around the house with your laundry basket before putting those clothes away!

6. Walk while you wait

You can do this at the doctor, for the bus, while waiting for your kids to leave school, etc (just so long as it doesn’t make others nervous or look like you need the ladies’ room.)

7. Walk while watching TV

8. Walk while talking on the phone

9. Do a lap around the house during commercial breaks

10. Park at the end of the parking lot at the mall or grocery store

11. Take an extra lap around the grocery store before hitting the checkout line

12. Plan online walk dates with your friend

My friend and I used to do this a lot (we need to get back to doing this again!). She lives in Maine and I live in Croatia. We’d set a time to chat, and we’d walk/run in place and chat away. It was a fun way to get in steps and catch up on life and kids.

13. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator

14. Take a family walk after dinner

15. Set your alarm to remind you to do 2-3 laps around your home

16. Put on some workout music and get your kids to exercise with you
