Our List of Read Aloud Books + FREE Book Club Printable

Sharing is caring!

My family did a lot of read-alouds in the fall and winter evenings.

These are some of my favorite memories. As my mom or dad would read, I would be carried off to Avonlea, to a little house on a prairie, to an abandoned boxcar, or to a spine-tingling mystery.

Also, this was an opportunity for my parents to introduce us to amazing heroes of the faith: like Gladys Alyward, George Mueller, John Hyde, David Wilkerson, and others.

I am continuing this tradition with my own kids.

We have read countless books such as:

We’re currently reading Of Whom the World Was Not Worthy after having finished Croatia: A Nation Forged in War

Even though we’re coming up on summer, we still do read alouds – though not as often since we spend a lot of evenings outdoors playing basket ball or walking.

So, here is our list of read aloud books for this year

We currently do read-aloud time at bedtime. We gather on the boys beds and read our book after we’ve read the Bible together.

1. God’s Smuggler

We read this book while I was growing up. It was so fascinating to me, that I can’t wait to pass this one on to my children

2. Prince and the Pauper (find it here)

We are studying the Middle Ages in history this year, and so this book is going to fit right in. They’ve already watched the Disney version of this movie, and we’ll watch it again when we’re doing reading the book.

I am just as excited, because Prince and the Pauper was a favorite movie for me growing up!

3. 50 People Every Christian Should Know: Learning From the Spiritual Giants of the Faith

I have been wanting to read this book myself. I think I’ll read it with my kids because I think it’s great to learn from those who have gone on before us.

4. The List – by Robert Whitlow

It’s been quite a while since I read this book. I think my kids would really enjoy the suspense.

5. Hood – Stephen R. Lawhead

Even though we’ve already read a book on Robin Hood, this one has a different take on the story. It’s a fascinating series.

6. Through Gates of Splendor

Every Christian should read this book at least once in their life. I want my kids to know what it means to truly give our lives for the cause of Christ.

7. Hudson Taylor

There is no hero of the faith that illustrated faith and and trust in God as Hudson Taylor.

8. Something Greater Than Gold – The Story of Eric Liddell

We have watched Chariots of Fire (though we should watch it again!), but the story of Eric Liddell goes far beyond the 1924 Olympics.

That is the story I want my kids to know.

Do you do read-alouds with your kids?

What books do they love best?

What do they love to do while you’re reading aloud to them?

One thing that would make read-alouds, and reading in general, more fun is to form a book club!! Your kids can get together with their friends and form a book club where they talk about what they’re reading and the books they love best.

Below is a free printable Book Club packet.

This packet includes a cover page where your kids can write their Book Club details, a page where they can write the details of the book they read and rate it, and finally a page where they can draw a picture from the book they read.

You can get this Book Club Printable Packet for free when you click here or on the image below
